Spring Lawn Care After Snow - Benitez Landscaping Pro Services

The snow is finally melting, the days are getting longer, and we are all ready to say goodbye to winter. But as the white blanket recedes, you might notice that your lawn looks a little... tired. Between heavy snow piles, ice, and freezing temperatures, winter takes a toll on your grass.

Don't worry—brown patches and matted grass are common this time of year. With a little TLC, we can get your curb appeal back on track. Here is your essential guide to post-snow lawn care.

1. The Gentle Rake-Out

Once the snow is fully gone and the ground has dried out a bit, your first step is a general cleanup. Winter winds often drop branches, and dead leaves may have been trapped under the snow.

Give your lawn a light raking. This does two things:

  • It removes debris that blocks sunlight.
  • It lifts matted grass blades, allowing air to circulate near the soil.

Pro Tip: Be gentle! The ground is likely still soft and soggy. Heavy-handed raking can pull up healthy grass roots.

2. Watch Out for "Snow Mold"

Have you noticed circular patches of crusty, matted grass that look gray or pink? That is likely Snow Mold, a fungal disease caused by moisture trapped under snow cover.

The good news is that it usually resolves itself as the weather dries out. Raking those patches gently to loosen the matted grass will help the soil dry faster and stop the fungus in its tracks.

3. Tackle Salt Damage

If you salted your driveway or walkways to prevent slipping, that salt may have leached into the bordering grass. Salt sucks moisture out of plant roots, leaving brown, dead strips along your concrete.

If you suspect salt damage, give those specific areas a deep soaking with a hose (once temperatures remain above freezing) to flush the minerals out of the soil. You may need to patch these areas with fresh seed later in the season.

4. Aeration: Let Your Lawn Breathe

Heavy snow piles compact the soil, squeezing out the oxygen pockets that grassroots need to survive. If your soil is too hard, water and fertilizer will run off instead of sinking in.

Spring aeration involves pulling small plugs of soil out of the ground to reduce compaction. This is one of the most impactful things you can do for a lush lawn this year.

5. Don't Fight the Battle Alone

Spring cleanup is heavy work. Between hauling debris, dethatching, aerating, and applying the right pre-emergent weed control, it can eat up your entire weekend.

Benitez Landscaping Pro Services is here to help. We have the heavy equipment and the expertise to wake your lawn up the right way, ensuring it comes back thicker and greener than ever.
